History

Apollo, formerly known as Warren, was first settled in 1790. Warren was laid out in 1816 and consisted of 50 lots. Four log structures made up the first homes built in Warren. Drake Log Cabin is a historic 1-1/2 story log cabin that was restored in 1971 and still stands today. The first post office was established in 1827.

With the introduction of the post office, the area was officially renamed from Warren to Apollo in 1848 to avoid confusion with the post office of another town in Pennsylvania of the same name. The first board of election was held on May 8th, of 1848. The present name is after Apollo, the Greek and Roman god of music, healing, light, prophecy and enlightenment.

Apollo Borough is located in Armstrong County, 35 miles northeast of Pittsburgh in a former coal mining region. Land bordering Apollo is North Apollo and Kiskiminetas Township. Surrounding neighborhoods include Vandergrift, Leechburg, Avonmore, and Saltsburg. Apollo is full of dedicated volunteers and employees. Together we strive to keep Apollo Borough's historic character.
